TSLP is offered for FREE to any student registered in a TDSB or TCDSB school. Programs may have age and/or technical proficiency requirements. The programs that require students to demonstrate certain skill levels prior to taking certification courses are marked with a TP Logo symbol. Benefits Include:

Sports Streams

The Learn to Skate program is for beginners, skates and helmets will be provided to participants, this program is in two districts only (in 3-2014).

New Program - Fitness Instructor – Includes Standard First Aid; High 5 Training and Can Fit Pro Course (must be 18 years of age by the end of May 2013).  Program details – successful completion of the Fitness Leadership course will enable students to teach fitness classes.  Course will run over 3 Saturdays and 2 Sundays.  100% attendance is mandatory.

New Program – Adapted and Integrated Instructor – includes Emergency First Aid and CPR C, Fundamental Movement Skills, Special Olympics Coaching, High 5 Training and City of Toronto training.  Participants will receive training and expertise in how to work with athletes with intellectual disabilities.  There will be opportunities available to volunteer at Special Olympics events held at various locations for various sporting events.

TP Logo The Skiing program is for intermediate and advanced level skiers, students will be contacted and interviewed/screened via the telephone.

The Soccer program includes a 2 day technical skills training course (16 hours), students must commit to both days. Students will miss one day of school to complete the technical course (schools/teachers are notified). The soccer program also includes Fundamental Movement Skills, First Aid and High Five training.

The Basketball program includes a technical program, first aid, High Five training and Fundamental Movement Skills certification course.

TP Logo The Tennis program is supported by Tennis Canada and the Doug Philpott Foundation. Selected students take free lessons from certified instructors through the Doug Philpott program.  These lessons occur for 7 weeks during the summer.   Students attend a one hour class each day Monday to Friday in July and August.   Students who acquire the required level of technical skills continue in the program and attend an instructor school.

Aquatics Streams

The Learn to Swim program is for beginners. These students are encouraged to also participate in the Wading Pool program.

Wading Pool Attendant certification is offered to all students including the students who were screened out of the NLS program, and to the students who did or did not participate in the Learn to Swim program.

New Program – Aquafit Fitness Instructor– includes Standard First Aid and CPR C.   This course focuses on developing skills in the area of class management, basic water movement, understanding the major muscle groups and the designing of target training sets.  Upon successful completion of this course, certified instructors will be qualified to conduct shallow and deep water aqua fitness classes...  100% attendance is mandatory.

TP Logo The National Lifeguard Service (NLS) course is for intermediate and advanced level swimmers. Students must participate in 2 screening assessments and pass a swimming proficiency test to be eligible for the program.

TP Logo The Instructors' Course: Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor is supported by the Lifesaving Society. This program will develop knowledge in class management, teaching, evaluation, leadership, communication and administration. Successful completion of this program will qualify candidates to instruct learn to swim lessons and lifesaving programs. Candidates must be 16 years of age, NLS Certified and will be asked to complete a screening assessment.

Volunteer Positions are available for participating students during March Break for participants in the basketball and soccer programs, and are available as an outlet to fulfill their community hours that are required in order to graduate from high school. Participants can select different community centres where they would like to volunteer. They will be notified where they are accepted.

Job Readiness Day:

Job Readiness Day is an additional program offered to all TSLP students. This is a day where staffs from the YMCA and City of Toronto Parks and Recreation come out to assist the students in job readiness. Topics covered during the day include: how to answer interview questions, where to look for employment, how to complete an application form and how to dress/act during an interview. Students also have an opportunity to take part in “mock interviews”. Check our Calendar for more information.

Resume Writing Workshops:

TSLP will now be offering several Resume Writing Workshops at the YMCA North York Employment and Newcomer Center.  These workshops are offered for FREE to all TSLP students.  Students will learn how to create a winning resume from scratch. Check our Calendar for more information.

Graduation:

Each year Toronto Sport Leadership Program recognizes the hard work and successes of participating students. The graduation includes a formal presentation at Council and a graduation ceremony with presentation of certificates and a light lunch. Students are encouraged to bring one parent/guardian to help celebrate their accomplishments.

Last year the graduation was at City Hall, Council Chambers. Chance for the students to be formally recognized by the Mayor, City staff and supporting partners of TSLP. Check our Calendar for more information on this year's graduation ceremony.

The Alumni Program:

The Alumni Program is for any student who has successfully graduated from TSLP. Students will have the opportunity to work with both TSLP staff as well as other TSLP students from various years. The Alumni will be an integral part of the program offering insight and feedback. As volunteers some of the opportunities they will have a chance to  work on or be a part of  include social events, as photographers for TSLP events and courses, as mentors to new students and the Alumni will also have the opportunity to attend and speak at Information Sessions. You can choose which area you would like to help out with.  A one year commitment is required. If you are interested in giving back to TSLP please download the Alumni Application as a PDF or a Word RTF and mail or email the completed form back to us. We would love to have you join the team!
